History
Kawaha Point is an important headland on to Lake Rotorua and was chosen as an early settlement by Maori. Close to the shores were fishing villages and further up on the headland was a fortified pa. As the most efficient transport was by canoe, the views gave resident tribes security by being aware of any warriors or visitors arriving by water. Remnants of this early Maori civilisation are still evident and the rock-strewn headland still has the grassy trenches and ramparts of this ancient pa.
Accommodation
Kawaha Point Lodge’s luxury lodge accommodation comprises 8 beautifully appointed super king/twin guest suites with stunning views over the lake or gardens. Each suite, named after one of the lakes in the area, has its own balcony to enable guests to enjoy their panoramic view in private.
All of the rooms are elegantly decorated in calming, neutral tones of rich creams and taupes, and furnished with hand-picked pieces of antique furniture and notable New Zealand artwork. This colour theme runs throughout the lodge, and in order to maximise their magical views across the lake, the drawing room, dining room and library are on the first floor and open to a broad, shaded verandah – perfect for a leisurely breakfast or pre-dinner drinks.
Each guest suite is air-conditioned and offers a flat screen television, guest telephone, broadband internet, selection of teas & fresh coffee, homemade cookies and fresh fruit. The library also offers a large selection of reading material and a DVD player, DVDs and CDs are available on request.
Dining
Dining is also a memorable experience with guests invited to eat al fresco in the lakeside gardens, in the conservatory, at the chandelier-lit Lodge table, or in one of the other private areas in the lodge. A secret ‘grotto’ that can only be reached via the wisteria-draped arches and stepped terrace, is an ‘alternative’ dining room for a celebratory occasion or wedding party.
