The West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand is a narrow strip of land nestled between the towering peaks of the Southern Alps and the expanse of the Tasman Sea. This coastal strip runs for 600 kms and has a number of iconic attractions that visitors to our country include on their “must see and do” list - glaciers, rainforests, raging rivers, rugged coastline and pristine lakes.
Central to this land of beauty is the magnificent “Coast Road” between Greymouth and Westport (State Highway 6), recently voted one of the TOP TEN scenic drives in the world, on which you will find two of those “musts”. “Must see” the Pancake Rock formations and blow-holes at Punakaiki and “Must Stay” at the Breakers – one of New Zealand’s most spectacularly located bed and breakfasts.

The Breakers is run by Jan Macdonald with the help of her two faithful companions Jed and Nico (the family dogs). Occasionally you may also see Stephen – Jan’s partner, but he is more often in the background or busy at work as he is a self-employed electrician. Jan, Stephen, Jed and Nico all have a passion for the outdoors and with Stephen being a born and bred “Coaster”, have a love of the coast and all it has to offer. The Coast is full of gold mining and coal mining history together with lush rain forests and the ever-changing Tasman Sea, there is much to see and do and the “family” is constantly exploring the area. We have direct access to the beach below for some great exploring and colourful stone collecting – if you are lucky, you may even find a piece of jade (greenstone) which in Maori is know as “Pounamu”. With a love for the outdoors, Jan is only too willing to help with recommendations for activities and hikes in the area, and for the rest of your journey throughout the South Island.
