A boutique bed and breakfast experience in Cambridge, New Zealand.
Built in 1902 and originally named "Orongo", Thornton House is a central Cambridge landmark with a Historic Places trust classification. Reflecting contemporary comforts and traditional elegance, the guest rooms are designed to compliment the generous hospitality offered by the hosts.
Thornton House offers you the best of local accommodation in a house that reflects Cambridge's character and charm.
Guest Rooms
The two luxurious guest rooms are situated at one end of the house with our personal living space at the other. Both rooms reflect an English country theme with William Morris fabrics and wallpapers, an eclectic mix of antique and contemporary furniture and local original art.
Extra blankets and heaters, fresh flowers, television, a CD player, central heating, and the latest life style magazines enhance your comfort.
Each room has a sumptuous Queen bed with feather pillows and duvet, Egyptian cotton linen, mohair throws, reading lights and electric blankets.
The ensuites feature walk-in showers, heated towel rails, hair driers, thick fluffy towels, luxurious bath robes and a range of toiletries.
Outside the rooms there is a refreshment cabinet for your convenience with a range of complimentary teas and coffees and, of course, home made biscuits.
The Garden Room
The Garden Room is large and elegant and opens out onto a veranda overlooking the secluded back garden. It has both a queen and a single bed and a large (big enough for two) clawfoot bath.
The Blue Room
The Blue Room is romantic and inviting, the focal point being its antique brass bed. The plush soft furnishings create a cosy enclave that particularly appeals to couples and those travelling on their own.
Cuisine - Breakfast
We love cooking and we aim to make breakfasts a special occasion.
Our seasonal menu begins with fruit juice, cereals, fruit and Greek yoghurt drizzled with honey. This is followed by our cooked selection which includes fresh eggs from our own, very spoilt, free range hens.
Cuisine - Lunch & Dinner
We are five minutes walk from a good selection of restaurants and cafes. We have sample menus available and can make bookings for you.
Wine
A passion for wine and previous involvement with a local winery means that we are knowledgeable about local (and wider) New Zealand wines. A modest cellar of mainly NZ reds ensures the guest wine list is varied and based on regular sampling. New Zealand licensing laws allow wine sales to guests and we offer a wine list.
While the Waikato is not a main wine growing area there are about five wineries locally with the main ones open for cellar door sales and with attached restaurants.
