About Cedar House
Cedar House is a two-storeyed, Edwardian mansion originally built in 1909 for the prominent Muir family of Gisborne.  Her checkered history includes periods of use as a private school for girls "St Winifred's", private hotels, and restaurants, before being transformed into Gisborne's leading bed and breakfast inn.

Sadly neglected over the previous 30 years, from 1999 Cedar House has enjoyed an on-going programme of renovation designed to restore the original grand style, while incorporating the modern comforts and safety features expected by today's traveler.

The refurbishment highlights the extensive use of native (kauri, rimu and matai) timbers, the 3-metre-plus ceilings and lead-light windows.  Enter from the front porch into the spacious mahogany-paneled reception hall, which connects the main public rooms and stairs to the upper floor.

Accommodation
The super-king sized bed can be separated into two king-singles to accommodate those who prefer twin bed sleeping arrangements, in most rooms. We can add an additional fully spring roll-away single bed to either a standard or superior first floor room if required triple use.

Continental Breakfast available by arrangement at time of booking.

Kauri Room  :  Spacious, ground floor room with executive quality linen, cotton robes, T.V. and with own Ensuite. Entrance to large deck and swimming pool. This room has disabled facilities.

Rimu Room  :  Spacious, second floor room with executive quality linen, cotton robes, T.V. and private bathroom with spa bath. Super King size bed can be seperated into two king singles for those who prefer twin bed sleeping.

The Pool House  :  A spacious self contained room opening directly onto the pool, private bathroom, kitchen facilities, microwave, Sky TV and DVD player.

Dinner
Our location is handy to a wide variety of restaurants and cafes. While most serve a variety of foods in the "Pacific Rim" / modern fusion style, and there is also a smattering of casual ethnic cafes (Thai, Indian and Chinese). We normally will have sample menus of the major premises on hand for guests to peruse. We recommend reservations.

    Arts and Crafts

Within the city there are several outlets for NZ antiques, local art and memorabilia, while the Ngatapa Valley hosts several craft outlets that can be enjoyed in a half or full day along with wineries and gardens. We thoroughly recommend a visit to Toihoukura, the gallery of the Maori Art School at the local Polytech - Open Mon-Fri, our regional Museum and Art Gallery, and our neighbourhood potter Seymour May.

    Gardens and Arboreta
A two-minute walk takes you to the riverside Civic Rose Gardens, a 15 minute stroll across the river to the Botanical Gardens with its sister city features from the USA and Japan, and approximately 1/2 hour drive will take you to one of two lovely "tree-gardens" worth visiting - Hackfalls Aboretum and Eastwoodhill Arboretum. In addition, there are several private gardens that may be visited with advanced notice.

    Trout Fishing
We can recommend the services of expert fly-fishing guides to take guests on a wilderness fly-fishing expedition to the rivers or lakes surrounding Gisborne. The season runs from 1 October to 30 June with the best times for fishing generally October/November and February to April. Please contact us for further details and rates.

    Ocean Fishing
Several local operators can take guest out, with advance notice for a half or full-days fishing for yellowtail kingfish, hapuka, mako shark and other sport and game fishing experiences.

    Horse Trekking
Located at Wainui Beach, Waimoana Horse Trekking operate twice-daily 2-hour treks over farmland hills and down to Makarori Beach.  Longer treks on application. We are happy to make a booking for you.
